WATER SCENARIO
In most cities, centralized water supply systems depend on surface water sources like rivers and lakes.
South India (Erode, Karur, Tirupur and Perundurai Industrial Area), for instance, is dependent on water storage in 300,000 around local towns and hamlets in panchayats, where as South India gets its water from the Bhavani river, which is 95km away. Where surface water sources fail to meet the rising demand, ground water reserves are being tapped, often to unsustainable levels.
Kottagudi Water Supply Projects
Kottagudi water supply projects at Bodinaickenur consists of schemes
- Comprehensive Protected Water Supply Schemes involving infiltration wells, collection wells and associated pumping behind the Kurankani Reservoir at Bodinaickanur and covering 79 panchayats. Sources for other infiltration wells include Meenakshipuram and Mekamalai river which cover 23 panchayats.
- The Protected Water Supply(PWS) Scheme covers 129 panchayats. It involves drilling deep borewells, construction of storage tanks and installation of pipeline networks.
